Goodbye Maria I'm Off to Korea
Goodbye Maria I'm Off to Korea (Don Larkin, Joe Simpson, and Ken O'Rourke) It wasn't long ago that we met in Italy I was a G.I. Joe, and you were Bella Marie Soon we were married and then we sailed away Across the ocean blue to my home in I-O-Way There we've been living happy as can be Raising fields of corn and a small family But now Maria, you must be brave, and smile We're in another fight, so I must leave you for awhile. For now it's: Goodbye Maria, I'm off to Korea Far across the sea It's the same old story, it's up to Old Glory To win another fight for liberty So, keep the home fires burning And it won't be long, until I'll be returning Good Maria, though I'm off to Korea In my heart you'll always be my Maria. How does war affect the individual? He has to leave the people he loves which is almost the hardest part, leaving any sense of familiarity and comfort.

Suicide is Painless
By Johnny Mandel Visions of the things to be The pains that are withheld for me I realize and I can see That suicide is painless It brings on many changes And I can take or leave it if I please The game of life is hard to play I’m gonna lose it anyway The losing card I’ll someday play So this is all I have to say That suicide is painless It brings on many changes And I can take or leave it if I please The sword of time will pierce our skin It doesn’t hurt when it begins But as it works its way on in The pain grows stronger, watch it burn That suicide is painless It brings on many changes And I can take or leave it if I please A brave man once requested me To answer questions that are key Is it to be or not to be And I replied oh why ask me That suicide is painless It brings on many changes And I can take or leave it if I… That suicide is painless It brings on many changes And I can take or leave it if I please That suicide is painless It brings on many changes And you can do the same thing if you please This song is very much an anti-war song and is the theme song of the TV show MASH, which was about the Korean War. This song does not state very much about the foreign policy but it definitely portrays war in a negative sense leading me to believe that whoever made this song would much rather prefer a policy of isolationism. This song shows the effect that war can have on individuals by making them believe that suicide is the best option. The despair and despondency in the song show just how much the war has destroyed his sense of self worth and reason to live. In terms of overall message of the song I do not agree with it. The message is quite simply that suicide is the best option and that is something that I cannot agree with or even fathom how someone could be brought so low as to even consider it. However simply viewing this song as a comment about war destroying the lives of those involved is something that I can agree with. The overall impact of war on the individual is terrible; soldiers come back with posttraumatic stress disorder and sometimes can never integrate into society again. |
